What was the Tocks Island Dam project? ›

The proposed Tocks Island Dam would have created a lake-sized reservoir roughly 40 miles long and a mile wide. Before building it, some 600 families and property owners whose land would be inundated had to be displaced. Some of these families had lived on and worked the land for centuries.

Delaware River / Max depth

Kayakers paddle the river between the park's low mountains, while hikers trek alongside and peer down into the 1,000-foot-deep Water Gap.

Grand Canyon campaign

The Sierra Club's most publicized crusade of the 1960s was the effort to stop the Bureau of Reclamation from building two dams that would flood portions of the Grand Canyon.

A historic marker at the Big Eddy Observation Deck offers two theories of how the 113-foot-deep hole was created: 1) it is a long-drowned “plunge pool” from a glacial waterfall or 2) it is a pothole that tumbling rocks scoured out through erosion, according to HMdb.org.

Swimming in areas of the river outside the life guarded beaches is permitted, but not recommended. Strong currents, sharp drop-offs, and constantly changing river conditions make many areas unsafe for swimming.

The deepest point on the Delaware River is located at Narrowsburg in the Town of Tusten, where the Big Eddy runs 113 feet deep. Normal riffle areas are 2-8 feet in depth and pools range from 12-20 feet deep.

However, the most famous fact about the Delaware River is the famous crossing of it by George Washington in 1776 which helped him successfully surprise Hessian troops in New Jersey during the American Revolution.

The Delaware River within the park has very high quality water that is protected from degradation by Special Protection Water Regulations adopted by the Delaware River Basin Commission (DRBC).

Record flooding on the Delaware River occurred in August 1955, in the aftermath of two separate hurricanes traversing the area within less than a week. First, Hurricane Connie produced 10 inches of rain in 48 hours, putting the Delaware and surrounding rivers at flood stage.
