Powers/Abilities:The Seraphim are mystic entities with vast knowledge and power overmagicforces at a level comparable to demons and deities. Their appearanceseems to be amultitude of black-hooded, tattooed, blue-skinned humanoids ofuncertain gender. The Seraphim couldcreate spheres of magic energy, known as Shields of the Seraphim orSpheres ofthe Seraphim, which could contain and restrain powerful beings such asIkonn. However, the real extent of the Seraphim's power is unknown.

TheSeraphim are prone to grant similarpowers to those whoinvoke them in the right way for evil or good purposes. The powergranted can make concrete different effects:

  • the Shield of the Seraphim(also calledSeraphimic Shield or Seraphim's Shield)is a barrier, often circular or spherical, which can deflect, restrain,slowand/or neutralize almost every kind of force directed against it, frommagicblasts to iron bullets, from cosmic rays to laser beams. The Shield canbe usedto surround and capture an enemy, orto protect the user oranother
  • the Shades, in their raw form, seem like bolts crackling through black clouds with destructiveeffects.More generally, the Shadesof the Seraphim are a strong way to achieve more various effects. TheShades can make the caster's command real, can support andstrenghten astill present spell, or can be directed to a typical magic action suchasbanishing or neutralizing. They have been called "shadowy" butalso "shining" and "shimmering." The Shield has alsobeen called "grim" and"bright," but how those anthiteticproperties can co-exist is a secret
  • the "Secrets" of theSeraphim has a magic power but their cause and their effect is still...a secret
  • the Sign of the Seraphim was an incredible protection, it hurled back a spell to its caster
  • the Skill of the Seraphim lentto the conjurer a greater agility, movement coordination, dodging andprobably tumbling capabilities -all at athlete level
  • the Speed of the Seraphim letthe caster enhance personal speed on foot and in flight
  • the Circle of the Seraphim is a ring uesd as defense to resist to an external force
  • the Serum of the Seraphim is"the most potent medicineknown to theoccult."

TheSeraphim are probablystronger, quicker, and more athletic, agile and resisistant than a normal human being, but it is unkonwn atwhat level.

Seraphim (Doctor Strange allies) (2)History:

(DoctorStrange III#48 - BTS) - As with many other powerfulmystic beings, the Seraphim were involved in the War of the SevenSpheres, a pan-cyclic conflictbetween magic entities thatwould endure for 5000 years. Theirveryfierce enemyin the War was Shaeol.

(Doctor Strange I#177 (fb) -BTS/Incredible Hulk II#126 (fb) -BTS) - The Seraphim "rule the black of night,"performed a"silent chant" and wore dark clothes. It is probable that theSeraphim's usual environment of living is a dark or black place, orthat they act anduse their powers mainly during the night of their world, a momentduring which, typically, the world is silent.

(Strange Tales I#126/2 - BTS) -TheAncient One invoked the Seraphimand was granted the power to send Doctor Strange via dimensional travel.

(Doctor Strange III#49) - The Warof the Seven Spheres reacheda stage in which the mystic entities involved had to personally fight,so whenthe Seraphim were invoked by Strange to create a Shield, the Seraphimappeared intheir multiple form askingthe Sorcerer Supreme to fight forthemagainsttheir enemy, Shaeol. But other entities also sought Strange's help, Cyttorakgrabbed the Seraphim's sphere, and Watoombscattered the Seraphim far from Dr. Strange. Ikonnintervened and its five manifestations were restrained by the Seraphimwiththeir Spheres, but the situation became even more chaotic with thearrival of theFaltine, Raggadorr,Satannish, Valtorr and Denak. Dr. Strange did not wishtofulfilany of the requests and so pronounced the Enchantment of Emancipation, thereby refusing to servethe Seraphim and any other being in their multidimensionalwar.TheSeraphim andthe other mystic entities then had to accept Strange's denial ofservice and sohurled him back toEarth but negated him any help in thefuture.

Comments: Nameand use in spells created by Stan Lee;
Form revealed by Len Kaminski (writer),Geof Isherwood(pencils) and Petrecca & Hudson (inks).

InDoctor Strange III#58, Strange revivedPura-Shamutra, one of the entities involved in the War of the SevenSpheres, whose death had caused a cosmic unbalance and had seriously damaged thetissueof the Universe. Strange convinced Pura-Shamutra that the War couldlead to theannihilation of everything and that the annihilation was probably thepurpose ofthe Trinity of Ashes. Pura-Shamutra promised to intervene to stop thedestruction.
It is my opinion that GeofIsherwood's purpose about thefuture events was that Pura-Shamutra and/or Strange would manage tostop theWar, convincing the other mystic entities about the extreme dangerrelated tothe death of one of them, and eventually that the Seraphim and theother entitieswho tried to enslave Strange would grant him again their favor.
Instead, in Doctor StrangeIII#80, Strange revealed thathe had fought BTS in the War and that he had regained the favor of theVishanti(and probably the Seraphim's favor too).

Apparently there is no connections among the Seraphim and the angelicorder of the seraphim in theBible. The onlysimilarity I can find is that the Seraphim ARE a multitude - or appearas amultitude of beings, and the Biblical seraphim are also many, probablymyriads.Other particulars are rather different. Isaiah6:2 describedthe seraphim:"each of them with six wings; two wings covered his face, twocoveredthe feet and two let him fly." This idea/description wasprobablyinfluenced by previous concepts like those presented in the Egyptianand Babyloniancultures: the idea of a being, messenger or spiritual mediator betweenhuman and Godwas still present in the Zoroasterian religion and was also acceptedin Hebrew thought. An Assyrian bas-relief from around 883-859 B.C.depicted two winged"geniuses" and was probably one of the most ancient influences whichinspiredthe idea of the Christian "angels." From Isaiah's description, Dionigithe Aeropagita developed histhought in De Coelesti Hierarchia (6th Century AD),about the hierarchicorder of the Christian universe, linkinghumans to thecelestialcreatures. Hedefined nine orders organized in three triads whose hierarchy was givenby thedegree of intellect attending to the divine mysteries. The most nearto Godwere the seraphim. The hierarchia was followed byGregorio Magno andbecame current for allthe Middle Ages: a seraph was preferrably portrayed with six red wings. The redcolor probably recalled the origin of their name, "seraph," which meant"burning" or "being ablaze" in Hebrew. In the 15th Century, theiconographic distinction that differentiated the various orders ofangels wasabandoned. The seraphim started being portrayed with two or only onepair ofwings, like the cherubim, and also started appearing as angelsof femaleappearance and angels without wings.

Information taken by "I Dizionari dell'Arte, di Rosa Giorgi - MondadoriElecta, 2004".

However, the Seraphim arecovered from black robesthatthey could hideeven female characteristics, so the gender of the Seraphim is still anopen pointof debate for me.

Thanks to Catherine Yronwode and her THELESSER BOOK OF THE VISHANTI website, I was able to easilyfind someoccasions in which Seraphim's name was used by Dr. Strange for hisspells. Theinvocations which produced an effective spell could mean that theSeraphim wereBTS.I added many other spells invoking the Seraphim to Yronwode's list;nonetheless, the list is not complete, and some spells havebeentranslated fromItalian toEnglish. Feel free to let us know what is missing or incorrect, specifying theissue, the caster, the effects of the spell and all the informationuseful todescribe and understand it. Unless otherwise specified in this list, thespellcasterwas Dr. Strange.
