Turmeric may have health benefits, such as reducing inflammation and pain in addition to boosting metabolism and immunity. You can add turmeric to coffee, lemon water, milk, smoothies, and juice. You can also make delightful teas or tonics to reap the health benefits of turmeric. Keep in mind that pairing turmeric with both pepper and foods full of healthy fats will help your body absorb it.[1]
Ingredients
Turmeric Tea
- 1.5 cups (360 mL) of water
- 1 tsp (5 g) of turmeric
- 1 tsp (5 g) of cinnamon
- 1 tsp (5 g) of fresh ginger
- A pinch of cloves
- A pinch of nutmeg
- A pinch of black pepper
- Honey
- Milk
- Yields one serving
Turmeric Tonic
- 2 cups (480 mL) of coconut water
- 2-inch (5.1-cm) knob of fresh turmeric
- 1-inch (2.54-cm) piece of fresh ginger root
- ¼ of a lemon
- ¼ tsp (1.25 g) of sea salt
- 1 to 2 Tbsp (14.8 to 29.6 mL) of honey
- A dash of fresh-ground black pepper
- Yields two servings
Method 1
Method 1 of 3:
Adding Turmeric to Drinks
1
Brew turmeric into your coffee. Add 1/2 tsp (2.5 g) of powdered turmeric to your coffee grounds before brewing them. You can also add 1/2 tsp (2.5 g) of cinnamon to the grounds to enhance both the flavor and the health benefits, if desired. Then, simply brew your coffee as usual and enjoy.[2]
2
Add turmeric to warm lemon water. Squeeze the juice from half of a lemon into a mug. Add ¼ to ½ teaspoon (1.25 to 2.50 g) of powdered turmeric to the mug, then fill it with warm water. Sweeten the drink with honey, if desired. Stir the mixture thoroughly, and enjoy.[3]
3
Make a cup of warm turmeric milk. Turmeric milk, also called golden milk, is served as a health tonic in India. Make your own by warming 1 cup (237 mL) of whole milk and ½ cup (118 mL) of water in a saucepan over low heat. Stir in ½ tsp (2.5 g) of powdered turmeric and boil the mixture for 10 minutes. Turn off the heat and blend in a dash of fresh-ground black pepper.
4
Blend turmeric into a smoothie.[4] Add a pinch of ground turmeric to any smoothie for a nutrition boost. Or blend 2 cups (275 g) of carrots, 1 large ripe banana, 1 cup (140 g) of pineapple, 1/2 cup (120 mL) of carrot juice, 1 1/2 cups (360 mL) of water, 1 cup (240 mL) of almond milk, 1 Tbsp (14.8 g) of lemon juice, 1/2 Tbsp (7.4 g) of fresh ginger, and 1/4 tsp (1.25 g) of powdered turmeric for a refreshing and healthy smoothie.[5]
5
Mix turmeric into sweet fruit juice. Turmeric tastes best added to sweet juices, like mango or pineapple. Simply stir ½ tsp (2.5 g) of powdered turmeric into your favorite juice or juice blend, like apple, carrot, or white grape juice.[6]

Method 2 of 3:
Making Turmeric Tea
1
Combine the ingredients in a saucepan. Put 1.5 cups (360 mL) of water, 1 tsp (5 g) of turmeric, 1 tsp (5 g) of cinnamon, 1 tsp (5 g) of fresh ginger, and a pinch each of cloves, nutmeg, and black pepper in a medium saucepan.[7]
- The pepper will help your body absorb the turmeric more easily. You don't have to add much, however—a little pinch is fine.[8]
2
Simmer the mixture for 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Turn the burner to medium-low heat. Don’t allow the mixture to reach a rolling boil; you simply want it to warm, which will help the herbs steep into the water.[9]
3
Strain the mixture. Turn off the burner. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve into a mug to ensure only liquid remains. Discard any large pieces that remain in the sieve.[10]
4
Add honey and milk to taste. A splash of almond milk and a drizzle of honey are the perfect additions to this tea. You could add sugar, coconut milk, or a dash of lemon juice instead, if desired.[11]

Method 3 of 3:
Creating Turmeric Tonic
1
Blend turmeric, ginger, and coconut water. Put 2 cups (480 mL) of coconut water, a 2-inch (5.1-cm) knob of fresh turmeric, and a 1-inch (2.54-cm) piece of fresh ginger root into a blender. Blend the ingredients until the turmeric and ginger are well shredded and incorporated into the coconut water.[12]
2
Strain the liquid. Use a fine mesh sieve to strain the liquid into a jar or glass. Discard any of the shredded turmeric or ginger that gets trapped in the sieve.[13]
3
Add lemon juice, salt, pepper, and honey to taste. Squeeze a quarter of a lemon over the jar or glass. Add 1/4 tsp (1.25 g) of sea salt, a dash of fresh-ground black pepper, and 1 to 2 Tbsp (14.8 to 29.6 mL) of honey to the container. Mix the ingredients thoroughly until they are well combined.[14]

Tips
No matter how you choose to take turmeric, always include a pinch of black pepper with it. This will help your body absorb it better, especially the compound curcumin, which reduces inflammation in your body.[15]
